So, you like your new photo … now what?
You've opened a photo in Lightroom and you are happy with it. Something about it just seems to work.
But you also have a nagging suspicion that it could be better, and you are not sure what to change—or how to do it.
So you drag a slider. Then another.
You try a preset, undo it, try something else and…
Half an hour later you aren’t sure whether the photo looks any better than when you started.
If that sounds familiar, you're not alone.
In my experience, most photographers who use Lightroom have never been shown a clear way to approach an edit, including many people who have used it for years.
What gets in the way
Thinking about what prevents a good photo from becoming a better one, it comes down to four things:
- Identifying the fixes the photo really needs. Problems that are obvious once someone points them out can be very hard to spot in your own picture.
- Knowing what would improve it. Noticing that something is off is one step; knowing which change makes it better is something else.
- Understanding how to make the change. Lightroom has a lot of tools, and their names rarely explain what they do.
- Knowing when to stop. I see many photos that have been pushed too far, from oversaturated colour to heavy-handed sharpening.
All four can be learned, and this class is built around them.
Why I teach this masterclass
I offer this class largely because of what I have seen in my time running Gallery Photiq. Through our juried exhibitions, I have reviewed many thousands of images submitted over the past seven years. And for longer than that, I have also judged camera club competitions across the UK and USA. So I’ve seen plenty of what works, and what does not.
The vast majority of images can be made much better with just a few simple edits, and even the best photos—the ones I choose for exhibition—could often be improved further.
The adjustments and enhancements that make the biggest difference are often simple but powerful, and many photographers have not yet learned to see what an image needs or how to apply the fix.
What students say
“I’ve worked with Nat on an ongoing basis, and he’s both a Lightroom expert and an excellent teacher who tailors his instruction to my post-processing needs. Though I’m not particularly technical, he’s helped me master it and work efficiently. He’s also helped me make the most of new upgrades, including the AI features, which have transformed key parts of my workflow.”—Ron Cooper, USA
What we will cover
Skip the guesswork and learn what matters the most, all in 90 minutes.
Lightroom WOW! is a live online masterclass where I demonstrate the essential techniques step by step, mainly working in Lightroom Classic.
I leave out the esoteric and the rarely useful, so the time is spent on what makes the biggest difference.
The session covers these topics:
- A quick overview of how Lightroom Classic and Lightroom (the cloud-based version) fit together, and when to use each.
- A fast, efficient way to go through a shoot and pick the images worth developing, including basic criteria for deciding what to keep, and a brief look at Collections.
- Develop, where most of our time goes:
- how to look at a photo and see what it needs
- the fundamental adjustments almost every photo benefits from, including cropping, straightening, Lens Corrections and Geometry
- masking with brushes and gradients to lighten and darken parts of a picture (dodging and burning)—truly one of the most powerful and important areas of Develop
- retouching and cleaning up the image without it looking obvious
- sharpening to perfection
- profiles and presets, and how to use them well
- ways to apply your edits to many photos all at once (which is touched on throughout the session)
- knowing when you’re done
- What to do with your photos once they are finished, including when Photoshop or other editing software is worth using.
- Time for your questions at the end.
What you will be able to do
My aim is that after the class you will be able to:
- go through a shoot quickly and choose the photos worth developing
- work through large numbers of photos faster
- find Lightroom's tools, settings and controls more easily
- see what a photo needs, and make it look much better than it did when you started
- understand what makes a good photo and what to think about when you process one, including when it is finished
I look for balance and harmony in a photo, and for the kind of picture that makes people say ‘Wow!’.
Who this class is for
This masterclass is mainly for photographers who are in the early stages of mastering their post-processing, from beginners through to intermediate.
If you have used any version of Lightroom and found it confusing, or you are not sure which tools do what, this is for you.
You do not need to know the names of the tools. I explain what the essential tools do, along with when and why you would choose them.
If you have used Lightroom for years and feel pretty comfortable with it, you're welcome too. Working in Lightroom for a long time and being shown how to use it properly are different things, and you may well find something here that changes the way you work.
You do not need to have Lightroom installed to benefit from the training, and you do not need to follow along on your own computer.
Watch, listen, ask your questions at the end, and watch the recording again afterwards.
Meet your teacher
I'm Nat Coalson, a fine art photographer, experienced photography teacher, and the owner of Gallery Photiq in Leamington Spa, England.
I use Lightroom every day in my professional work, and have done for more than 20 years (even since before it was released to the public). I’ve taught thousands of students how to use it, across all kinds of photography.
I'm an Adobe Certified Expert in Lightroom (and Photoshop), and I wrote four books about it, each published by Wiley in the series Lightroom: Streamlining Your Digital Photography Process. My books have been distributed worldwide for nearly 20 years.
You can learn Lightroom on your own, and many people do. (I mostly did!) Free tutorials are everywhere, and a dedicated person can work through them—given enough time, organisation and discipline.
What this class gives you is a fast track to the professional-grade techniques that enable you to make your best photographs, taught in an order that makes sense and grounded in the principles of photography and visual art.
You can learn in this one online session what many photographers spend years working out by trial-and-error.
Lightroom WOW! is offered through the Photocraft Academy, my training programme for photographers. It provides regular live sessions, online courses, and one-to-one coaching, plus in-person workshops and tours, all for photographers who want to make better pictures and have fun doing more with them.
More from past students…
“Nat is an excellent photography coach, combining great experience with creativity, analytical rigour and strong interpersonal skills. I would work again with Nat given any opportunity to do so.”—Chris Pepler, UK
